Winter X Games Test A.I. for Snowboarding Judging
Big news for snowboarding fans—this year’s Winter X Games in Aspen, Colorado, is trying something totally new: an A.I. judge. While human judges will still have the final say on scores and medals, an artificial intelligence system will unofficially evaluate snowboarders’ runs in the SuperPipe event. This means viewers and commentators will get a peek at what the tech thinks of those jaw-dropping flips and spins. The idea is to give judges an extra tool to make scoring even more accurate. Jeremy Bloom, the X Games CEO and a former pro skier, explained, “Humans can make mistakes, and so can A.I., especially in its early stages. But this could be a superpower for judges.” The A.I. will use video footage to analyze each athlete’s performance and spit out a score—kind of like how tennis uses electronic line calls or soccer uses cameras for offside decisions. This isn’t the first time tech has stepped into sports judging. Gymnastics has already tested an A.I. system called the Judging Support System at world championships. And down the road, A.I. could play a bigger role in other judged sports like surfing, diving, and even breakdancing. For now, though, it’s all about giving snowboarding fans a little extra insight into the action. So when you’re watching this week, keep an eye out for those A.I. scores—they might just give you a whole new perspective on what makes a winning run.
