A brutal winter storm has made its way into the Carolinas, bringing with it heavy snow and bone-chilling temperatures. This rare weather event, driven by a blast of Arctic air, has already claimed at least 10 lives and is expected to leave much of the South shivering in single-digit or low-teens temperatures through Wednesday night.

In coastal areas, up to six inches of snow could fall, while icy roads are causing chaos across the region. North Carolina Governor Josh Stein urged residents in the eastern part of the state to stay off the roads entirely, calling them “the most dangerous place to be in a winter storm like this.”

Meanwhile, in Charleston, South Carolina, snowplows are out in full force, working to clear streets and keep traffic moving. Along the Georgia-Florida border, the threat of ice accumulation—up to a quarter of an inch—is making travel conditions even more treacherous.

Experts say this kind of extreme cold is unusual for the Southeast. “It’s pretty darn cold for what’s considered to be normal,” said a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. They warned that snow could refreeze overnight, turning roads into icy hazards.
