Evacuations Ordered as Wildfire Sweeps Western North Carolina

A dangerous wildfire has erupted in Western North Carolina, prompting urgent evacuations in McDowell County. The blaze, known as the Crooked Creek fire, has already scorched over 150 acres and is threatening the small town of Old Fort, located about 25 miles from Asheville. Strong winds and dry conditions are fueling the flames, making it difficult for firefighters to contain the fire, which remains zero percent contained as of Wednesday afternoon.

This comes as the region continues to recover from the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene in September. Massive plumes of smoke have been seen rising between the hills, with the smoke cloud even appearing on radar. Local officials are urging residents in affected areas to follow evacuation orders to stay safe.

The fire reportedly started when a tree fell onto a power line, sparking the flames. Several outbuildings have been destroyed, but thankfully, no injuries have been reported. First Baptist Church in Old Fort has opened its doors as a shelter for those displaced by the wildfire.

The North Carolina Forest Service had earlier warned that the risk of fires was high due to low humidity, gusty winds, and dry conditions. While winds are expected to ease overnight, there’s a chance they could pick up again on Friday. Residents are being advised to avoid outdoor burning, including campfires or cooking fires.

Meanwhile, a second wildfire has ignited north of Marion, the county seat. Although no evacuations have been ordered there, officials are asking people to steer clear of the area. The Appalachian region, known for its scenic hiking trails, now faces a growing threat as firefighters continue to battle the flames.

Stay updated with local alerts and avoid the affected areas to ensure your safety.
