Trump's TikTok Lifeline Sparks Backlash in China
For millions of TikTok users in the US, President Donald Trump’s decision to delay the app’s ban was a relief. But across the Pacific, the move has ruffled feathers in China, where TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, is headquartered.
Trump’s proposal for TikTok to sell a 50% stake to a US buyer as a way to avoid a shutdown has not been well received. Chinese officials have emphasized that the app’s future should align with Chinese laws and international fairness.
The US president recently signed an executive order pushing the enforcement of the TikTok ban back by 75 days. This gives the administration time to explore alternatives that protect national security without abruptly shutting down a platform used by over 170 million Americans.
But China isn’t budging. On social media platforms like Weibo, users have criticized the proposal as unfair. Comments like “Apple and Tesla should give up 50% of their shares to China” and “Robbery is still robbery, even at 50%” have gained traction, reflecting widespread disapproval.
Meanwhile, Chinese state media has weighed in, calling Trump’s approach a “trap” that backfired. The Global Times, a state-run publication, argued that the US’s obsession with national security has caused unnecessary turmoil for both American users and ByteDance.
Amid the TikTok drama, there’s been a glimmer of hope for US-China relations. President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping recently discussed renewing ties, and China sent a high-ranking official to Trump’s inauguration—a rare move signaling openness to dialogue.
Still, the TikTok issue remains a sticking point. Trump hasn’t ruled out linking tariffs to the app’s fate, suggesting he could impose hefty duties on China if a deal isn’t approved.
As the clock ticks, TikTok’s future hangs in the balance, caught in the crossfire of global politics and tech rivalry. Whether it’s a joint venture or a complete ban, one thing’s clear: the stakes are high for both sides.
