Just a day after slapping hefty new tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China, President Trump admitted something many have been warning about: Americans might end up footing the bill.
In a bold social media post, Trump hinted at potential challenges ahead, saying, “THIS WILL BE THE GOLDEN AGE OF AMERICA! WILL THERE BE SOME PAIN? YES, MAYBE (AND MAYBE NOT!).” While he remains committed to his promises of curbing illegal immigration and rebalancing trade, he’s now suggesting that reaching these goals could come at a cost for everyday Americans.
“WE WILL MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, AND IT WILL ALL BE WORTH THE PRICE THAT MUST BE PAID,” he added, emphasizing his belief in the long-term benefits of these moves.
Interestingly, Trump also floated an unusual idea: making Canada the 51st U.S. state. He argued it would mean lower taxes and better military protection for Canadians—plus, no tariffs. It’s a proposal he’s brought up a few times since his election victory.
The new tariffs—25% on goods from Mexico and Canada and 10% on Chinese imports—are set to kick in soon. Experts are already warning that this could lead to higher prices for everyday items, from groceries to gas.
Canada and Mexico aren’t taking this lightly. Both countries have announced retaliatory measures, with Canadian leaders calling the tariffs an “act of economic warfare.” Canada’s former finance minister pointed out that these trade disputes could hurt Americans, who rely heavily on Canadian products.
Even some of Trump’s allies are hoping the tariffs won’t stick around for long. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham suggested they’re a temporary measure to force change, adding, “If the change comes, I think the tariffs probably go away.”
But for now, it’s unclear what concessions Trump is looking for. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau revealed his calls to the White House have gone unanswered, leaving many wondering what’s next in this trade showdown.
As the tariffs take effect, one thing is certain: Americans could soon feel the pinch in their wallets.
