President Donald Trump made headlines Thursday by signing an executive order to declassify files tied to the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr. “That’s a big one. A lot of people have been waiting for this for years, for decades,” Trump said during the signing in the Oval Office.

The move comes after years of public demand for transparency surrounding these historic events. While many JFK-related documents have already been released—including 13,000 files during the Biden administration—some remain heavily redacted. Trump’s order aims to change that, stating, “Their families and the American people deserve transparency and truth.”

The release won’t happen overnight, though. The order gives officials 15 days to present a plan for fully disclosing JFK-related records, with a 45-day timeline for RFK and MLK files.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Trump has tackled this issue. During his presidency, he initially held back some documents at the request of national security agencies, citing concerns over protecting confidential sources. But now, on the 2024 campaign trail, he’s doubling down on his promise to reveal everything.

The National Archives had previously concluded its review of JFK assassination records in 2023, with 99% of the files made public. Still, agencies like the CIA and Pentagon have kept certain documents under wraps, arguing that releasing them could compromise sensitive information.

Trump’s latest move has reignited debates over government transparency and the public’s right to know. Will this finally bring closure to decades of speculation? Only time will tell.
