Trump’s Refugee Program Suspension Puts Afghan Allies in Limbo
President Trump’s recent executive order to halt the US refugee program has sparked concerns for thousands of Afghans who were cleared to start a new life in America. Advocacy groups warn that at least 2,000 individuals, including families of US service members and Afghan allies, could be left stranded.
The order, titled “Realigning the United States Refugee Admissions Program,” claims that admitting refugees might harm US interests. It pauses the program for a minimum of 90 days, with the possibility of extension. During this time, officials will evaluate whether resuming the program aligns with the nation’s priorities.
Shawn VanDiver, founder of #AfghanEvac, a coalition supporting Afghan resettlement, expressed deep frustration. “These people have been waiting long enough,” he shared. Many are hiding or living in fear, their futures now uncertain.
The suspension directly affects families of around 200 US military personnel, as well as relatives of those who have already relocated to the US. While flights haven’t been canceled yet, the implementation of the order could delay or derail their plans indefinitely.
Since the US withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, over 180,000 Afghans have resettled in America. Advocacy organizations like #AfghanEvac, which received recognition from the State Department, have tirelessly pushed for the safe evacuation of Afghan allies.
VanDiver stressed the urgency of the situation, noting that delays could erode trust and create long-term security concerns. “Every day feels like an eternity when you’re in hiding,” he said. “We’re breaking promises made to these families.”
If the suspension continues beyond 90 days, tens of thousands more could face indefinite delays. Advocacy groups are calling on the Trump administration to honor commitments to Afghan allies and ensure their safe resettlement.
For now, the fate of these families remains uncertain, leaving many to wonder if the US will uphold its promises.
