Trump Visits North Carolina, Criticizes Democrats on Disaster Relief

President Donald Trump is heading to North Carolina this Friday, his first trip outside Washington since his inauguration. The visit focuses on recovery efforts after Hurricane Helene’s devastating floods, with Trump criticizing Democrats for what he calls their abandonment of the state.

During a recent interview, Trump claimed the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been “getting in the way” of recovery efforts in North Carolina. He accused Democrats of using FEMA “not to help” and promised to “straighten things out” for residents still struggling months after the hurricane.

FEMA reports that around 13,000 North Carolina households have used its transitional shelter assistance program, which has been extended until May 26. However, some displaced residents express frustration with delays and unclear communication about available aid.

Trump’s visit is part of a broader effort to contrast his leadership with that of his Democratic counterparts. He’s also set to travel to California, where wildfires have caused widespread damage, and plans to address disaster relief funding with congressional leaders.

Republicans face a balancing act between conservatives pushing for spending cuts and Trump’s promises to fund recovery efforts. House Speaker Mike Johnson emphasized the need to “get spending under control,” while some California Republicans warn against politicizing disaster aid.

Trump’s trip underscores his focus on disaster management and his critique of federal agencies like FEMA, which he says “complicate everything.” As debates over disaster relief and funding continue, the president aims to position his administration as the solution to what he calls Democrats’ failures.

CNN has reached out to FEMA for comment on Trump’s remarks.
