In a rare moment of unity, President Trump and California Gov. Gavin Newsom set aside their political sparring to address the urgent need for wildfire relief in the state. The two leaders met in Los Angeles on Friday, where they pledged to collaborate on recovery efforts after weeks of public disagreements.
The meeting came as a surprise to many, given their recent clashes. Trump had previously criticized Newsom, even mocking his name, while Newsom accused the president of undermining constitutional rights. But as wildfires continued to devastate California, both leaders seemed to recognize the importance of putting politics aside.
“I appreciate the governor coming out and meeting me,” Trump said, sporting his signature “Make America Great Again” hat. “Very much.” Newsom, dressed casually in jeans and a denim shirt, responded warmly, “Thank you for being here. It means a great deal.”
Despite their ideological differences—Trump as a conservative leader and Newsom as a prominent liberal voice—the two appeared to find common ground. Newsom emphasized the need for federal support, saying, “We are going to need your help.” Trump agreed, stating, “We are looking to get something completed. The way you get something completed is you work together.”
The brief meeting at Los Angeles International Airport highlighted a shared understanding: in times of crisis, cooperation matters more than confrontation. As Trump put it, “They are going to need a lot of federal help.” Newsom echoed the sentiment, expressing confidence that they would work together to address the challenges ahead.
For now, at least, it seems both leaders are on the same page—focused on helping California recover from one of its most devastating wildfire seasons.
