The Trump administration is making its first move to look into prosecutors who handled cases tied to the January 6 Capitol riot. This comes after former President Donald Trump promised retribution as part of his campaign.

According to sources, an internal memo from Ed Martin, the interim US attorney in Washington, DC, details the plan. Martin described it as a “special project” and has asked attorneys to hand over all files, documents, and emails related to obstruction charges under US Code 1512(c).

These charges were used against some rioters but were later dismissed following a Supreme Court decision last summer. The ruling limited federal prosecutors’ ability to pursue such charges.

Martin’s memo called the use of the charges a “great failure” and stressed the need to “get to the bottom of it.” Two long-term prosecutors have been tasked with reviewing the materials and submitting a report by Friday.
