Trump Claims Immunity in E. Jean Carroll Defamation Case

Former President Trump is once again in the spotlight, this time over whether his presidential immunity applies to the $83 million he owes writer E. Jean Carroll for defaming her. Carroll alleges Trump sexually assaulted her decades ago and defamed her by calling her accusations a “hoax” and a “lie.”

Trump’s legal team is arguing that a recent Supreme Court decision, which shields him from criminal charges tied to his official acts as president, should also protect him from paying damages in this case. But Carroll’s lawyers are pushing back hard. They claim Trump’s comments were purely personal and unrelated to his presidential duties.

“If there was ever a case where immunity doesn’t apply, this is it,” Carroll’s attorney, Roberta Kaplan, stated in a brief. She emphasized that Trump’s statements went beyond the scope of official acts and were meant to discredit Carroll’s claims.

The legal battle has been ongoing for years, with a previous jury finding Trump liable for defamation. Now, the dispute is unfolding in the federal appeals court in Manhattan, as Trump seeks to overturn the hefty verdict.

This case is just one of several legal challenges Trump has faced recently. While some criminal cases against him have ended or been delayed, the fight with Carroll continues to move forward. It’s a high-stakes clash that raises big questions about the limits of presidential immunity—and who gets to define them.
