In a sudden and dramatic move, the Trump administration has pulled the plug on services for refugees who have already arrived in the United States. This includes Afghans who supported the U.S. during the war, and now find themselves cut off from essential help like housing, job assistance, and caseworker support.

The decision, announced in a memo obtained by CNN, left refugee advocates scrambling. “We’ll have refugees going homeless,” one advocate said. “It’s completely unprecedented. Nothing like this has ever happened.”

This latest action follows an executive order President Trump signed earlier this week, suspending refugee admissions to the U.S. on grounds of public safety and national security. Around 10,000 refugees who had already booked flights after a lengthy vetting process saw their travel plans canceled.

But the new memo takes things a step further. It stops federal funding to resettlement agencies, which provide critical services to refugees during their first three months in the country. These agencies help newcomers with everything from finding housing to navigating public transportation and the banking system.

“The goal is self-sufficiency,” an immigration attorney explained. “Without these services, people are left without the tools they need to succeed.”

More than 30,000 refugees who arrived since October 1 now face uncertainty. “If you’re a recent arrival, you’re what, just on your own now?” one source said.

Advocates are calling for urgent action to reverse the decision, especially for Afghans who worked alongside the U.S. government. “This is a fixable issue,” said Shawn VanDiver, president of #AfghanEvac. “We stand ready to work with the administration to get it right.”

For now, thousands of refugees are left in limbo, wondering where their next steps will lead.
