In a surprising move, President Donald Trump has let go of Rohit Chopra, the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). The news came to light when Chopra received an email from the White House on Saturday morning confirming his dismissal, according to sources.

Chopra, who had been under fire from Republican lawmakers for his pro-consumer policies, shared the news in a post on X. “This letter confirms that my term as CFPB Director has concluded,” he wrote. “I know the CFPB is ready to work with you and the next confirmed Director, and we have a great deal of energy to ensure continued success.”

The CFPB, known for its role in overseeing financial institutions, declined to comment on the situation. However, a White House official stated, “It’s the executive’s decision and prerogative to see who they want in that role.”

During his tenure, Chopra introduced several controversial measures aimed at protecting consumers, such as capping overdraft fees at $5 and credit card late fees at $8. While the late fee rule was struck down by a federal judge, the overdraft fee rule was finalized last year but remains likely to face legal challenges.

Under Chopra’s leadership, the agency also worked on making personal banking data more accessible and removed nearly $49 billion in medical debts from credit reports. “People who get sick shouldn’t have their financial future upended,” Chopra stated earlier this year.

The CFPB was established after the 2008 financial crisis through the Dodd-Frank Act, initially championed by Senator Elizabeth Warren. Warren praised Chopra for “holding Wall Street accountable for cheating hard-working families” and warned that weakening the agency would invite opposition from progressives.
