President Donald Trump isn’t losing sleep over Elon Musk’s recent criticism of a $500 billion AI project he announced earlier this week. The tech billionaire took to his social media platform, X, to cast doubt on the funding behind the initiative, but Trump chalked it up to personal beef rather than a real issue with the deal.
“He hates one of the people involved,” Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday, likely referring to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. “I’ve spoken to Elon, and the folks in this deal are incredibly sharp. But hey, we all have people we don’t like.”
The project, dubbed Stargate, aims to boost AI infrastructure in the U.S. with investments from OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank. The companies plan to kick off with $100 billion and eventually pour up to $500 billion into the effort. Musk, however, claimed on X that SoftBank has “well under $10 billion secured” and questioned the financial backing of the entire venture.
Trump shrugged off the skepticism, saying, “They’re very rich people. I hope they have the money, but the government isn’t footing the bill here.”
The tension between Musk and Altman isn’t new. Musk, who co-founded OpenAI but left in 2018, is currently suing the company, accusing it of straying from its nonprofit mission. The feud spilled onto X, with Musk sharing old posts from Altman that were critical of Trump.
Despite the public spat, Trump seemed unfazed. “I’m not frustrated,” he said when asked about Musk’s comments. “Elon’s a smart guy, but this is about moving forward with AI.”
The White House also stood by the project, with press secretary Karoline Leavitt urging the public to trust the CEOs involved. “The American people should take President Trump and those CEOs at their word,” she said.
As the drama unfolds, one thing’s clear: when it comes to AI and big money, even the biggest names in tech can’t avoid a little drama.
