Trump Leaves Democrats Divided, Some Open to GOP Collaboration

President Trump’s bold moves to reshape the federal government have left Democrats scrambling—and surprisingly divided. Instead of rallying together in opposition, the party is figuring out how to respond while some of its members are even signaling a willingness to work with Republicans.

Governor Tony Evers of Wisconsin, a Democrat, stood out this week by defending immigrants in his State of the State speech. But many other Democratic leaders have stayed unusually quiet as Trump targets policies like birthright citizenship, diversity programs, and foreign alliances. Some lawmakers are taking a “wait-and-see” approach, while others are actively seeking bipartisan cooperation.

For instance, dozens of Democrats backed the Laken Riley Act, which allows the deportation of undocumented immigrants accused (but not yet convicted) of crimes. Others are collaborating with Republicans on a border security bill. Even as they oppose some of Trump’s cabinet picks, many of his nominees are gliding through confirmation without much pushback.

The most vocal resistance to Trump’s policies hasn’t even come from elected Democrats—it’s been from the bishop at Washington National Cathedral, who publicly urged the president to show compassion for immigrants and LGBTQ+ children.

Senator Brian Schatz of Hawaii summed it up: “We’re no longer trying to win a news cycle. We’re trying to win an argument, and that’s going to take time and patience.”

Democrats in Congress recently gathered to settle on a unified message, deciding to focus on economic issues they believe cost them the November elections. But with Trump’s administration pushing hard on multiple fronts, it’s clear the party is still figuring out how to respond effectively.

For now, the Democrats’ struggle to unite is leaving many wondering: Can they find a way to stand together—or will internal divisions keep them on the defensive?
