Trump Criticizes Bank of America Over Alleged Bias Against Conservatives

In a surprising moment during a virtual appearance at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, President Trump turned the spotlight on Bank of America. While addressing executives on Thursday, Trump shifted gears to express concerns about how conservatives are allegedly treated by major banks—specifically pointing fingers at Bank of America and its CEO, Brian Moynihan.

“By the way, speaking of you—and you’ve done a fantastic job—but I hope you start opening your bank to conservatives,” Trump said. “Many conservatives complain that banks are not allowing them to do business, and that includes a place called Bank of America.” He didn’t stop there, also bringing up JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, urging both to “open your banks to conservatives because what you’re doing is wrong.”

Moynihan responded with a nervous laugh and quickly moved the conversation to next year’s World Cup. A Bank of America spokesperson later clarified that the bank doesn’t close accounts for political reasons but follows strict government regulations that sometimes lead to ending client relationships.

This isn’t the first time Republicans have raised concerns about so-called “debanking,” where accounts are allegedly closed for political or ideological reasons. Conservatives have long criticized banks for diversity programs, environmental initiatives, and cutting ties with fossil fuel companies. These complaints have also been echoed by cryptocurrency supporters and venture capitalists, who are increasingly backing Trump.

Banking groups often explain that regulations require them to monitor and close accounts linked to suspicious activities like money laundering. They argue that these closures happen across the political spectrum, not just to conservatives. A JPMorgan spokesperson added that the issue lies with “regulatory ambiguity” and called for clearer guidelines from Washington.

Trump’s comments come at a time when big banks are optimistic about his second term, hoping for fewer regulations to boost profits. Yet, this unexpected critique highlights ongoing tensions between the financial industry and conservative groups—a topic that’s likely to stay in the spotlight.
