US TikTok Users Flock to RedNote, Face Chinese-Style Censorship
As TikTok’s future in the US hangs in the balance, many users are turning to an unexpected alternative: RedNote, also known as Xiaohongshu. The Chinese app, which has surged to the top of the US App Store, is gaining attention as a potential new home for so-called “TikTok refugees.” But for some, the experience has come with an unwelcome surprise: Chinese-style censorship. American users like Heather Roberts, an artist with over 32,000 TikTok followers, have praised RedNote for its welcoming community. “Everyone is so nice, so kind,” she shared. “It’s really bringing us together.” However, the honeymoon phase hasn’t lasted long for others. Many are finding that RedNote’s content moderation rules are far stricter than what they’re used to. Unlike Western platforms, where moderation often targets explicit or harmful content, RedNote enforces China’s broader censorship guidelines. This includes restrictions on political topics, LGBTQ+ discussions, and even seemingly innocuous posts, like fitness photos showing abs. One user’s post asking if the platform welcomed gay people was quickly removed, while others faced homophobic comments after voicing their concerns. The app’s rise in popularity has left RedNote scrambling to adapt. The platform is hiring English-speaking content moderators and developing translation tools to navigate the cultural divide. Some Chinese users are even offering tips to help newcomers avoid common pitfalls, such as acknowledging China’s stance on Taiwan. While the influx of American users presents challenges, it’s also being seen as a sign of China’s growing influence. “It’s a self-selective cohort of curious users,” said Ivy Yang, a China tech analyst. “They’re open to learning about the other side of the digital firewall.” For some, like Jeremy Fraga from Texas, RedNote has become more than just a replacement for TikTok. “It’s challenged my worldview,” he said. “I believe I’m going to make this my new home.” But as more users encounter China’s strict moderation rules, the question remains: how long will the appeal last?
