The Weeknd Returns to Grammys After Four-Year Boycott, Kicks Off World Tour

The Weeknd made headlines last week, but it wasn’t just for his new world tour. The superstar also ended his four-year boycott of the Grammys with a surprise performance at this year’s awards show.

Back in 2020, The Weeknd had called out the Recording Academy for its lack of transparency after his hit “Blinding Lights” didn’t land a single nomination. He even vowed to skip the Grammys altogether. Fast forward to Sunday night, and there he was, taking the stage to perform two tracks from his latest album, “Hurry Up Tomorrow.”

The Recording Academy’s CEO, Harvey Mason Jr., reflected on the journey during the show. He acknowledged The Weeknd’s criticism and shared how the Academy has worked to improve since then. “Criticism is okay,” Mason said. “I heard him. I felt his conviction.”

Over the past few years, the Academy has made significant changes to its membership, adding over 3,000 women voters and increasing diversity among its ranks. Now, nearly 40% of voters are people of color, and 66% are new members.

The Weeknd’s performance marked the final chapter in his musical trilogy, following “After Hours” (2020) and “Dawn FM” (2022). Fans were thrilled to see him back in the spotlight, and his timing couldn’t have been better.

Just days before the Grammys, The Weeknd revealed details about his “After Hours Til Dawn” stadium tour, which kicks off in Phoenix, Arizona, on May 9. The tour will hit major cities like Detroit, Chicago, Montréal, and more.

With his Grammy return and a massive tour on the horizon, it’s clear The Weeknd is ready to make 2024 his year.
