ICC Moves to Charge Taliban Leaders for Crimes Against Women

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is taking big steps to hold Taliban leaders accountable for alleged gender-based crimes in Afghanistan. The court’s chief prosecutor has requested arrest warrants for two top Taliban figures, accusing them of persecuting women and girls.

“There’s strong evidence that these leaders are responsible for severe abuses against Afghan women and those who don’t conform to Taliban gender norms,” said the prosecutor. The warrants target the Taliban’s Supreme Leader, Haibatullah Akhundzada, and their Chief Justice, Abdul Hakim Haqqani.
