Magnitude 6 Earthquake Shakes Southern Taiwan, Injuring 15
A strong earthquake rattled southern Taiwan early Tuesday, leaving at least 15 people with minor injuries and sparking emergency rescue efforts. The quake, initially measured at magnitude 6 by the U.S. Geological Survey, hit just after midnight local time, with its epicenter located near Yujing, a rural district in Tainan City. According to local authorities, the tremors caused a house to collapse in Nanxi District, where rescuers pulled six people, including a child, from the rubble. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported so far, though assessments of the damage are still ongoing. The Zhuwei Bridge on a provincial highway was also reported to be damaged, adding to the challenges for emergency responders. Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration recorded the quake as slightly stronger, at magnitude 6.4. The island is no stranger to seismic activity, lying along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a hotspot for earthquakes worldwide. Just last April, a devastating magnitude 7.4 tremor struck Hualien on the eastern coast, claiming 13 lives and injuring over 1,000 people. While this latest quake was less severe, it serves as a reminder of the constant threat posed by Taiwan’s tectonic setting. Residents in the affected areas are urged to stay cautious as aftershocks could follow. As cleanup and rescue operations continue, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of those impacted and assessing the full extent of the damage.
