Starbucks Brings Back Old-School Vibes with Major Policy Changes

Big changes are brewing at Starbucks, and they’re all about bringing back that cozy coffeehouse feel customers have been missing. Starting Monday, the chain is rolling out several updates in its U.S. and Canadian locations—part of CEO Brian Niccol’s effort to turn around recent declines in sales and foot traffic.

First up, the return of condiment bars! Remember those milk and sugar stations that vanished during the pandemic? They’re officially making a comeback. Plus, baristas will once again handwrite your name on your cup with a Sharpie, reviving a small but beloved touch that adds a personal vibe.

But that’s not all. Starbucks is expanding its free refill policy for “for here” orders. Now, anyone—not just loyalty members—can enjoy a refill on hot or iced coffee and tea, served in ceramic mugs or personal cups brought from home.

However, not everything is about perks. The company is also tightening up its in-store policies. Gone are the days of hanging out or using the restroom without making a purchase. Starbucks says it’s responding to feedback from customers and employees who want a clean, safe, and inviting space to enjoy their coffee.

Other new rules? No panhandling, discrimination, outside alcohol, or vaping on the premises. Employees have already been trained to enforce these guidelines.

These changes come as Starbucks continues to struggle with declining sales and customer visits. Global sales at stores open for at least a year dropped 7% last quarter, with transactions falling by 8%. Investors will get a closer look at whether these updates are making a difference when the company releases its next earnings report on Tuesday.

For now, Starbucks fans can look forward to a little more nostalgia—and hopefully, a better cup of coffee.
