RFK Jr. Faces Tough Questions from Senate Democrats Over Vaccines, Abortion Rights

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s confirmation hearing for Health and Human Services secretary turned into a heated showdown as Senate Democrats raked him over the coals for his history of controversial comments on vaccines, abortion, and public health. The hearing, held by the Senate Finance Committee, left many lawmakers frustrated by his vague and evasive answers.

Democrats zeroed in on Kennedy’s past anti-vaccine rhetoric, including his false claims linking vaccines to autism. They also pressed him on statements suggesting COVID-19 was a bio-weapon targeted at specific groups and questioned his shifting stance on abortion rights. Despite his attempts to downplay these remarks, senators like Michael Bennet (D-CO) brought receipts, citing direct quotes to challenge his credibility.

Kennedy tried to reassure conservatives by aligning himself with former President Trump’s anti-abortion stance, calling every abortion a “tragedy” and advocating for state control over the issue. Yet, Democrats like Maggie Hassan (D-NH) called him out for what they saw as a betrayal of his lifelong support for reproductive rights. “When was it that you decided to sell out the values you’ve had your whole life?” she asked.

Financial conflicts of interest also came under scrutiny. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) grilled Kennedy over his potential profits from lawsuits against pharmaceutical companies, questioning whether his personal gains could influence his decisions as HHS secretary. Warren warned, “Kids might die, but Robert Kennedy could keep cashing in.”

Despite the tension, some areas of agreement emerged, particularly around nutrition and disease prevention. Even critical Democrats acknowledged Kennedy’s points on the declining health of Americans due to poor food quality.

Kennedy’s nomination remains uncertain, with no Democrats currently pledging support. As Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) put it, “He was so untrustworthy and unprepared.” The hearing marked a rocky start for Kennedy’s bid to lead the nation’s health department.
