Proud Boys Lose Control of Their Name to a Black Church They Vandalized

The Proud Boys just lost ownership of their own name—and it’s going to a place they once targeted.

In a recent court decision, a Washington judge ruled that the far-right group can no longer use or profit from their trademarked name and symbols without permission from the Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church. Back in 2020, members of the Proud Boys vandalized the church, burning a Black Lives Matter banner during a night of chaos following a pro-Trump rally.

The church sued and won a $2.8 million default judgment in 2023. When the Proud Boys didn’t pay up, the church’s lawyers went after one of the group’s most valuable assets: its name.

Now, under the judge’s decision, the Proud Boys can’t sell any merchandise, like hats or T-shirts, featuring their name or logos without approval from the church. The ruling also allows the church to claim any future profits from such sales.

This legal move isn’t just about money—it’s symbolic too. The church described the Proud Boys’ actions as "acts of terror" meant to silence their support for racial justice. The judge agreed, calling the group’s behavior "hateful and overtly racist."

For now, the Proud Boys are left without control of the very name they’ve rallied under. It’s a powerful reminder that actions have consequences—and justice can come in unexpected ways.
