Pope Francis Calls Trump’s Deportation Plans a ‘Disgrace’
Pope Francis didn’t hold back when discussing President-elect Donald Trump’s plans to deport undocumented immigrants, calling the idea a “disgrace.” During a recent TV interview, the pontiff expressed deep concern over the proposed policies, which aim to aggressively remove immigrants through executive orders once Trump takes office.
“If it’s true, it’s a disgrace,” Francis said. “It’s unfair to make the most vulnerable pay the price. This isn’t the way to solve problems.”
The Pope has long been a vocal advocate for migrants, urging societies to welcome and integrate them. His stance is deeply personal—his own family narrowly avoided tragedy when their planned voyage to Argentina in 1927 was canceled after the ship they were supposed to take sank.
Francis has also taken steps to signal his opposition to Trump’s approach. He recently appointed Cardinal Robert McElroy, a critic of mass deportations, as the next Archbishop of Washington, D.C. McElroy has called such policies “incompatible with Catholic teachings.”
This isn’t the first time Francis has clashed with Trump over immigration. Back in 2016, he suggested the then-presidential candidate’s anti-immigrant views were “not Christian.”
In the same interview, the Pope shared updates on his recovery from a recent arm injury, saying it’s “moving better.” He also announced the appointment of Sister Raffaella Petrini as the new president of the Vatican City State commission, marking another step in his efforts to include more women in leadership roles within the Church.
Francis’ remarks highlight his ongoing commitment to social justice and his willingness to challenge leaders whose policies clash with his vision of compassion and inclusion.
