Ever wondered how McDonald’s tastes around the world? Photographer Gary He spent years exploring over 55 countries, snapping pics of the fast-food giant’s most surprising and unique dishes. His book, McAtlas, is a visual journey through McDonald’s like you’ve never seen it before.

From Singapore’s West Coast Park to a ski-up window in Sweden’s Lindvallen resort, He discovered McDonald’s locations that are anything but ordinary. In Guatemala City, one restaurant is shaped like a Happy Meal—a nod to the iconic kids’ meal that originated there. And in Downey, California, he visited the oldest operating McDonald’s, a 1950s space-age design that’s a slice of history.

But it’s the food that really steals the show. He found McBaguettes in France, McSpaghetti in the Philippines, and McArabia Chicken in the Middle East, all crafted to appeal to local palates. “You don’t build the largest restaurant chain in the world off the back of tourists,” He notes. “It’s the locals and what they need and want.”

He’s personal favorites? The egg bulgogi burger in South Korea, which he calls the most delicious item he’s tried. But his book isn’t just about the food—it’s a peek into how McDonald’s weaves itself into the fabric of cultures worldwide. From India’s vegetarian options to Australia’s locally sourced coffee, the chain’s adaptability is key to its global success.

Interestingly, McDonald’s didn’t back the project. He’s work is entirely independent, funded by his own travels and photography gigs. “McDonald's has not authorized or associated with this project at all,” he says.

“McAtlas” is more than a photo book—it’s a celebration of how McDonald’s connects with people everywhere. “It’s an honor and a joy to see what role McDonald’s plays in other people’s lives around the world,” He reflects.
