Former Vice President Mike Pence is on a bit of a solo mission these days, taking on Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s nomination for health secretary. Pence, a well-known figure in the anti-abortion movement, has been vocal about his opposition, even running ads through his organization, Advancing American Freedom. He’s accused Kennedy of pushing for “abortion on demand.” But here’s the twist: many of his fellow abortion opponents aren’t jumping on board.

Last Friday, thousands of anti-abortion activists gathered in Washington for the annual March for Life, marking the 52nd anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision. President Trump delivered a virtual speech, and Vice President JD Vance spoke in person. Notably, Kennedy, who’s shifted his stance on abortion over time, wasn’t mentioned at all.

While Pence’s team is digging in their heels, other leaders in the anti-abortion movement seem hesitant to join the fight. Some conservatives privately agree with Pence but aren’t speaking up publicly. Tim Chapman, head of Advancing American Freedom, pointed out that this silence could signal a shift in how the movement interacts with party leadership. “His confirmation lays bare the real question right now about what the movement exists to do,” Chapman said.

Kennedy, meanwhile, has pledged to support Trump’s anti-abortion agenda in hopes of securing his confirmation. Anti-abortion groups have largely backed Trump since 2016, when he promised to appoint Supreme Court justices who would overturn Roe v. Wade—a promise he delivered on in 2022.

For now, Pence’s campaign remains a one-man show, raising questions about the future of the anti-abortion movement and its relationship with political leaders.
