Big news in the tech world: OpenAI and SoftBank are reportedly teaming up to pour a whopping $19 billion each into Stargate, a massive project to build data centers across the U.S. This joint effort aims to support OpenAI’s growing AI needs, with plans to invest over $500 billion in total.
According to recent reports, both companies will own 40% of the venture, with additional backing from Middle East AI fund MGX. The project has already secured $100 billion in initial funding, part of which is being used to develop a facility in Abilene, Texas.
The stakes are high, and not everyone is convinced. Elon Musk, who runs a competing AI company, xAI, recently claimed on social media that Stargate “doesn’t actually have the money.” OpenAI’s Sam Altman quickly fired back, calling Musk’s statement “wrong.”
