Microsoft 365 VPN Feature to Shut Down by Month’s End

Microsoft 365 users, take note: the VPN feature in the Microsoft Defender app is getting the axe. Starting February 28, the tool, which helped secure data on public networks, will no longer be available.

The move comes shortly after Microsoft announced price hikes for its Microsoft 365 consumer plans. While the company is rolling out new AI-powered features like Copilot to justify the increases, it’s also pulling the plug on some existing perks. The VPN service, part of the app’s “privacy protection” feature, will be discontinued across Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android.

According to a support page, Microsoft determined the VPN wasn’t widely used, prompting its removal. The company stated, “We routinely evaluate the usage and effectiveness of our features. As such, we are removing the privacy protection feature and will invest in new areas that better align to customer needs.”

While other Microsoft Defender features, including anti-malware and identity theft protection, will remain intact, the VPN’s departure might leave some users scratching their heads. After all, discontinuing a feature while raising prices isn’t exactly a crowd-pleaser.

It’s worth noting that the Defender VPN had its limitations. It capped data at 50GB per user monthly and automatically excluded traffic from popular platforms like YouTube, Netflix, and Instagram. For those who relied on it, switching to a dedicated VPN service might be the next step.

So, bid farewell to Microsoft 365’s VPN—it’s officially bowing out at the end of the month.
