Mexico’s Sheinbaum Doubts U.S. Tariffs Will Happen

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum isn’t too worried about the U.S. imposing tariffs this weekend—and she’s got a plan just in case. During her daily press briefing on Wednesday, she shared her thoughts on the Trump administration’s threats, which could kick in as early as February 1.

"We don’t think it’s going to happen, really," she said confidently. "And if it does, we’ve got our plan ready." While she didn’t spill the details, Sheinbaum has hinted before that Mexico would respond with its own tariffs if needed.

The Trump administration has been eyeing tariffs as a way to pressure Mexico into cracking down on illegal migration and drug trafficking into the U.S. But Sheinbaum isn’t backing down. She emphasized that Mexico is still in talks with the U.S. to resolve the issue.

Sheinbaum also addressed another hot topic: mass deportations. In response to Trump’s threat to carry out large-scale removals, she revealed that 50,000 jobs are waiting for migrants who return to Mexico. This is part of a broader initiative called Mexico Embraces You, which includes setting up 10 reception centers along the border and offering support like medical care and social programs.

Whether or not tariffs come into play, it’s clear Mexico is preparing for any outcome. Stay tuned to see how this situation unfolds.
