In his first comments since being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday, NBA superstar Luka Doncic shared a heartfelt thank-you message with the Dallas Mavericks, their fans, and the city of Dallas.
Taking to X, Doncic wrote, “Seven years ago, I came here as a teenager to pursue my dream of playing basketball at the highest level. I thought I’d spend my career here and wanted so badly to bring you a championship. The love and support you’ve given me is more than I could’ve ever imagined.”
The trade, one of the biggest in recent NBA history, sent Doncic and teammates Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris to the Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round draft pick. The Utah Jazz also joined the deal, acquiring Jalen Hood-Schifino and two future second-round picks.
Doncic, who’s currently sidelined with a calf injury, reflected on his time in Dallas, saying, “In good times and bad, from injuries to the NBA Finals, your support never changed. Thank you for lifting me up when I needed it most.”
The 25-year-old star, who’s averaged 28.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 7.8 assists this season, also thanked the local community for letting him contribute to meaningful causes. “Dallas will always feel like a home away from home,” he added.
As he looks ahead to playing alongside LeBron James in Los Angeles, Doncic emphasized his commitment to winning championships. “Basketball means everything to me, and no matter where I play, I’ll do so with the same joy, passion, and goal,” he said.
The move surprised many, especially given Doncic’s All-NBA track record and his impact on the Mavericks. While there’s no timetable for his return to the court, the Lakers are set to face the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday.
For now, Doncic’s message to Dallas is clear: “Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.”
