Laguna Fire Quickly Contained After Evacuating College Campus

A fast-moving wildfire near Camarillo, California, sparked evacuations at a local university campus Thursday morning but was largely contained by the afternoon. The Laguna fire, which grew to about 50 acres, threatened Cal State Channel Islands, a public university with around 5,000 students.

Firefighters jumped into action early, with about 200 crew members battling the flames from the ground and air. Strong winds, gusting up to 45 miles per hour, made the situation tricky, but crews managed to stop the fire’s spread shortly after noon.

Thanks to red flag warnings about dangerous weather conditions, firefighting resources were already in place when the blaze broke out around 8:30 a.m. This quick response helped prevent a larger disaster.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office downgraded evacuation orders to warnings, and the university campus reopened later in the day. However, classes were canceled for the rest of Thursday as a precaution.

While the fire caused some disruption, the swift containment efforts ensured the safety of students and nearby residents. Officials continue to monitor the area as crews work to fully extinguish the blaze.
