Ken Martin Gains Momentum in Race to Lead Democratic National Committee
Ken Martin, the chair of the Minnesota Democrats, is inching closer to becoming the next leader of the Democratic National Committee (DNC). With support from 200 party members, he’s just 25 votes shy of the number needed to win the upcoming election on February 1. “I’m honored to have gained the support of leaders from across the country,” Martin said. “Our campaign is gaining momentum, and we’re going to continue to work hard for people’s votes.” Martin’s strong backing sets him apart from other candidates in the race. While he hasn’t released a full list of supporters, more than 100 national committee members have publicly endorsed him. His closest rival, Ben Wikler, chair of the Wisconsin Democrats, hasn’t disclosed his level of support. Other contenders, like former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley, claim fewer endorsements. O’Malley has mentioned 60 private commitments, but nothing concrete has been shared. The race has largely avoided major debates about reshaping the party after President Trump’s recent victory. Martin’s deep ties within the DNC and his leadership of a group of state party chairs have given him an edge. Despite some private grumbling from party officials about his candidacy, there’s been little public pushback. The election will take place on February 1 in Washington, D.C., where DNC members will choose their next chair. Current chair Jaime Harrison is stepping down, leaving the door open for a new leader to guide the party forward. With Martin’s campaign gaining steam, all eyes are on whether he can secure the remaining votes needed to clinch the role. Stay tuned as the race heats up! ---
