Israel’s military is ramping up its counterterrorism efforts in the West Bank, with at least 25 arrests reported in the past day. Palestinian officials say the death toll from the ongoing operation has climbed to 10, with four more injured in the city of Jenin.
The operation, now in its second day, isn’t limited to Jenin. Israeli forces have been active in Ramallah, Hebron, Tulkarm, and Bethlehem, according to local reports. Enhanced security measures at checkpoints have caused significant delays, tragically leading to the death of a 45-year-old woman waiting to reach a hospital outside Hebron.
Jenin’s mayor, Mohammad Jarar, shared that Israeli troops held around 600 people overnight at the Jenin Governmental Hospital. Bulldozers reportedly blocked the hospital’s doors with dirt from nearby streets, though those detained were allowed to leave Wednesday morning. Jarar also claimed residents were forced from their homes, a statement the Israeli military denies.
Israeli officials explained that people were temporarily held at the hospital to ensure their safety during nearby explosive detonations. This operation marks Israel’s latest push to curb militant attacks, including the use of improvised explosives planted in civilian areas.
The United Nations has noted the use of advanced weaponry in Jenin, including airstrikes, and expects the operation to continue for several days. These actions come amid rising tensions in the West Bank, where settler violence against Palestinians has surged and militant groups have grown stronger.
