As the ceasefire in Gaza holds, Israel is turning its attention to the West Bank, intensifying military operations that have already displaced thousands and sparked widespread concern. The Israeli military has launched a series of raids, set up roadblocks, and cut off entire communities, aiming to dismantle Palestinian militant groups in the region.
The latest campaign, dubbed “Operation Iron Wall,” focuses on the Jenin refugee camp, a known stronghold for militant factions. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz described the operation as a way to “ensure that terrorism does not return,” drawing on tactics used during the Gaza conflict. Hundreds of civilians have fled Jenin, with reports of water shortages and a near-total lockdown.
The West Bank is now dotted with nearly 900 military checkpoints, including over 170 iron gates installed since October 2023. These measures have severely disrupted daily life, with some journeys taking hours instead of minutes. Palestinian officials report that over 20,000 people have been displaced, and many have been arrested.
The shift in focus comes as far-right Israeli officials push for a tougher stance in the West Bank, emboldened by recent political developments. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich declared that security in the region has become an official war goal for Israel. Meanwhile, Palestinian leaders accuse Israeli forces of using excessive and indiscriminate force, echoing tactics seen in Gaza.
The situation has also drawn international criticism. Angelita Caredda of the Norwegian Refugee Council called the military actions “disturbing,” highlighting the disproportionate impact on civilians. Despite these concerns, Israeli officials argue that the measures are necessary to combat terrorism and prevent further violence.
As tensions rise, there are fears that the intensified operations could strain the fragile Gaza ceasefire. With over 500,000 Jewish settlers living in the West Bank, the region remains a flashpoint in the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The coming weeks will likely test the durability of the truce and the stability of the West Bank.
