A shooting at a supermarket in northern Indiana on Monday evening left two people dead and two police officers injured, authorities reported. The gunman was killed in a confrontation with law enforcement.
The incident began around 5:30 p.m. at Martin’s Super Market in Elkhart. Police responded to a 911 call and arrived to find two victims fatally shot inside the store. Officers then encountered the suspect outside, where an exchange of gunfire left the shooter dead and two officers wounded.
One officer was treated and released, while the other remains hospitalized in fair but stable condition. Officials assured the public that there is no further danger.
This tragedy is part of a larger national issue, with at least 20 mass shootings already recorded in the U.S. this year. Last year, the country saw more than 500 such incidents.
Elkhart Mayor Rod Roberson urged the community to pray for everyone affected, including the injured officers and first responders. Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims, suspect, or officers as they notify families.
The motive for the shooting remains unclear. The investigation is being led by the Elkhart County Homicide Unit, with support from local and state law enforcement.
Eyewitness Erin Swary, who was inside the store at the time, described the chaos: “I thought it was a balloon. We all looked around and I saw everyone starting to duck.” Swary, pregnant and thinking of her children, eventually escaped and warned others against entering the store.
Indiana Governor Mike Braun extended his condolences, stating he and his wife are praying for the victims and their families. Elkhart Police Chief Dan Milanese expressed the community’s shared grief, calling the incident “horrific.”
Elkhart, located about 15 miles east of South Bend, is home to over 53,000 residents. The investigation into the shooting continues as the community begins to heal.
