India Faces Uncertainty as Trump’s Immigration Policies Impact Migrant Families

In the small villages of India’s Gujarat state, the effects of migration are hard to miss. From plaques on buildings funded by overseas donations to homes left empty by families who’ve moved abroad, the ties to the United States run deep. But now, fear is spreading through these communities as President Trump’s tough stance on illegal immigration puts many at risk.

India is one of the leading sources of undocumented migrants to the U.S., with over 700,000 Indians estimated to be living there without legal status. While many arrive legally and overstay their visas, others attempt to cross the border illegally. In 2023 alone, around 90,000 Indians were caught trying to enter the U.S. without authorization.

In Gujarat, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi hails from, the anxiety is palpable. Families are turning to their faith, offering prayers and sweets at local temples for the safety of loved ones who’ve made the journey. One family, whose son recently crossed into the U.S., brought offerings just days before Trump’s inauguration, hoping for his protection.

The potential consequences of Trump’s crackdown extend beyond individual families. Many Indian villages rely on remittances from those working abroad, and a wave of deportations could have a significant economic impact.

While much of the focus on immigration has centered on Latin America, India’s unique position as a major source of undocumented migrants highlights the global reach of the issue. For now, families in Gujarat and beyond wait nervously, hoping their loved ones can avoid the storm of Trump’s policies.
