House Republicans are taking another crack at reshaping the story of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Speaker Mike Johnson revealed plans for a new select subcommittee to challenge what he calls “false narratives” about the attack, signaling the GOP’s ongoing efforts to recast the events of that day.

The announcement came just two days after former President Donald Trump issued a wave of pardons for individuals charged in connection with the riot. Johnson’s new panel, part of the Judiciary Committee, will aim to “expose the false narratives” pushed by the previous House committee that investigated the siege. That earlier panel, which concluded that Trump and his allies were central to the attempt to overturn the 2020 election, was dismissed by Johnson as “politically motivated.”

“We’re setting up this subcommittee to uncover the full truth for the American people,” Johnson said in a statement.

This move is the latest in a series of Republican efforts to reframe the Jan. 6 attack. Earlier this week, Trump pardoned nearly 1,600 people, including some convicted of assaulting police officers and plotting sedition. The former president has repeatedly called the rioters “great patriots” and described the day as one of “love.”

On Wednesday, Stewart Rhodes, founder of the Oath Keepers militia and one of those pardoned, was seen inside the Capitol complex grabbing coffee at a Dunkin’ Donuts. Rhodes had been serving time for sedition related to the riot.

The GOP’s latest inquiry raises questions about how the party will continue to influence public perception of Jan. 6, as they seek to shift the blame and rewrite the history of one of the most contentious days in recent U.S. history.
