Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, seems to be gearing up to release its latest AI model, Grok 3. Over the weekend, a handful of users on X (formerly Twitter) reported getting a sneak peek at the new system before their access was quickly cut off.

Those lucky few shared that Grok 3 handled a variety of tasks, from solving tricky riddles to writing code for a roulette wheel. While it impressed with its logical reasoning and coding skills, it wasn’t flawless—mistakes like missing details in the roulette wheel code were noted. Still, some users were blown away by its ability to answer questions even OpenAI’s models have struggled with.

One standout feature? Grok 3 revealed its system prompt, which includes an intriguing detail: it explicitly identifies Donald Trump as the 47th U.S. president. This could be a deliberate tweak to avoid political inaccuracies, a recurring issue with earlier versions.

Development of Grok 3 has been in full swing for months. Musk previously hinted at a release last year, but the timeline slipped. Earlier this month, he confirmed that pre-training—a critical step—was complete and suggested a launch by January or early February. To power Grok 3, xAI has tapped a massive data center in Memphis, packed with around 100,000 GPUs. Musk claims the new model was trained with 10 times the computing power of its predecessor, Grok 2.

Grok itself is xAI’s answer to rivals like OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Google’s Gemini. It’s known for its bold, unfiltered responses, often diving into topics other AI systems shy away from. Musk has promised to make Grok more politically neutral, and recent updates hint at an upcoming “Unhinged Mode” for even edgier replies.
