Google Maps to Rename Gulf of Mexico Following Trump’s Executive Order

Google Maps is making a big change – and it’s happening fast. Following an executive order signed by President Donald Trump, the mapping giant announced it will update the names of two iconic North American landmarks: the Gulf of Mexico and Mount Denali. Soon, users in the U.S. will see these locations labeled as the Gulf of America and Mount McKinley.

The move comes less than a week after Trump’s order aimed at “celebrating the legacy of American heroes.” According to the directive, the Secretary of the Interior has 30 days to push through these changes. Once the updates are officially logged in the U.S. Geological Survey’s database, Google Maps will jump into action.

Google shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), stating they’ll make the switch as soon as the new names appear in government records. The Geographic Names Information System, which serves as the official source for these details, is updated every two months, so the changes could roll out quickly.

The renaming of these landmarks has sparked mixed reactions, with some applauding the move as a nod to American history, while others see it as an unnecessary shift. For now, though, it’s full steam ahead for Google Maps – and it looks like the Gulf of America will soon replace the Gulf of Mexico on your screen.
