Google Maps to Update Gulf of Mexico and Denali Names Following Trump Order

Big changes are coming to Google Maps! The tech giant has announced it will update the names of two well-known landmarks to reflect recent changes ordered by the Trump administration. Once a federal mapping database is updated, the Gulf of Mexico will appear as the “Gulf of America” for U.S. users, while Denali—North America’s tallest peak—will be renamed back to Mount McKinley.

The move comes after an executive order from former President Donald Trump, who has pushed for these updates. The Gulf of Mexico’s new name, “Gulf of America,” is entirely fresh and created by the Trump administration. Meanwhile, Denali, which was renamed from Mount McKinley in 2015 during the Obama administration, will revert to its original title.

But here’s the twist: these changes won’t be the same for everyone. For instance, users in Mexico will still see the Gulf of Mexico labeled as such, following the country’s official stance. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum even poked fun at Trump for suggesting the new name. In other countries, both names—Gulf of America and Gulf of Mexico—will appear side by side on Google Maps.

Google has clarified that it will implement these updates once the official U.S. naming database, the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), reflects the changes. As of now, the database still shows the old names, so it might be a little while before we see the switch.

This isn’t the first time Google has adjusted its maps to align with government decisions, and it’s sparked plenty of conversations—and some pushback—about the role of politics in geography. Stay tuned for more updates as the database gets finalized!
