Fans of Days of Our Lives are mourning the loss of Francisco San Martin, the actor who brought Dario Hernandez to life on the beloved soap opera. Sadly, San Martin passed away at the young age of 39, as confirmed by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.
The Spanish-born actor, who also appeared in The Bold and the Beautiful and Jane the Virgin, died by suicide, according to the medical examiner. San Martin first stepped into the role of Dario in 2010, quickly becoming a fan favorite. His portrayal of the character left a lasting impression, even after the role was later recast.
In a 2016 interview, San Martin shared the incredible story of how he landed the Days of Our Lives gig. Originally cast for a small part as a dying patient, he impressed the casting director and was immediately offered a contract role. “I’ve never heard of that,” he said at the time. “Those are the kind of Hollywood stories that never happen.”
Born in Mallorca and raised in Montana, San Martin’s journey in the entertainment world began early. He was a child actor and teen model in Spain before finding success in Hollywood. Recently, he appeared in the short film Dot.
Camila Banus, who played San Martin’s on-screen sister Gabi, shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram. “Pepe, what can I say but I love you and rest in peace, my friend,” she wrote. “Love you mucho mucho mucho. I wish I had told you more.”
