Enrique Tarrio, Pardoned by Trump, Played Key Role in Capitol Riot
Enrique Tarrio, the former head of the Proud Boys, was set to spend 22 years behind bars for his part in the January 6th Capitol riot—until President Trump stepped in. On Monday, Trump included Tarrio in a wave of pardons, granting him clemency for his role in the violent attack.
Tarrio, 42, had been found guilty of seditious conspiracy and other charges tied to the events of that day. His sentence was the harshest of nearly 1,600 people charged in connection with the riot. His lawyer mentioned he could be out of federal prison in Louisiana as early as Monday night.
Even before January 6, Tarrio was no stranger to controversy. He had been involved in far-right activities for years, including the 2017 Charlottesville rally. Known for his signature sunglasses and baseball cap, he took over the Proud Boys in 2018 after its founder stepped down.
But it was during the 2020 election that Tarrio and the Proud Boys became household names. At a presidential debate, Trump famously told the group to “stand back and stand by,” to which Tarrio replied, “Standing by, sir.”
In December 2020, when Trump called his supporters to Washington for a “wild” protest on January 6, Tarrio wasted no time. He handpicked a group of Proud Boys, known as the Ministry of Self-Defense, to lead the charge.
Now, with Trump’s pardon, Tarrio’s future is back in the spotlight, sparking debates about justice and accountability in the wake of the Capitol riot.
