Elon Musk Joins Trump Administration as Special Government Employee

Elon Musk, the billionaire tech mogul, is officially on board as a special government employee in the Trump administration. While he’s not a full-time federal worker, he’s also not just a volunteer. This unique role allows Musk to work for the government for up to 130 days a year without a salary.

Musk, who’s been a vocal supporter of Trump, already has an office at the White House. His role includes pushing forward his government efficiency project, known as DOGE. Recently, Trump confirmed that Musk has access to the Treasury Department’s payment system, which handles federal money.

The president made it clear that Musk’s actions will need approval. “He won’t do anything without our go-ahead, and we’ll give it when it makes sense,” Trump said during a meeting with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

There’s still some uncertainty about whether Musk will need to file a public financial disclosure. Special government employees are typically required to submit such reports if they’re paid above a certain level or work for more than 60 days.

Musk’s new role is already impacting his business ventures. After Trump announced tariffs on Canada, Ontario canceled a contract with Starlink, Musk’s satellite internet service. This shows how closely tied Musk’s public and private interests have become under this administration.
