Planning to Buy Electronics? Prices Could Soon Spike with New Tariffs

Thinking about upgrading your phone, laptop, or TV? You might want to act fast. If a proposed 10% tariff on all Chinese goods goes into effect, the price of these everyday items could jump.

The idea of a blanket tariff on imports from China was recently floated, and if it happens, it could hit as early as February 1. Right now, many consumer electronics like phones, computers, and TVs have avoided tariffs, but that could change.

Here’s why it matters: the U.S. imports a massive amount of electronics from China. Last year, communications equipment—think phones, TVs, and even satellites—made up 12% of all imports from China, totaling a whopping $47 billion. Computers and related gear, like laptops and chips, came in a close second at $39 billion.

Toys, jewelry, and sporting goods are also on the list, and they’ve mostly escaped tariffs so far. But if the new tariff takes effect, these items could get more expensive too.

When will shoppers feel the pinch? Even if the tariff kicks in on February 1, it might take some time for prices to rise. Some stores might absorb the extra costs, especially if they’ve stocked up ahead of time. Others, though, could pass the added expense on to customers right away.

So if you’ve been eyeing a new gadget or tech upgrade, now might be the time to pull the trigger. Once the tariff hits, your wallet might not thank you.
