At 90, Ghanaian Music Legend Ebo Taylor Makes a Comeback
At 90 years old, Ebo Taylor, the legendary Ghanaian musician, is proving that age is just a number. Known for his groundbreaking work in highlife music—a vibrant blend of African rhythms and Western melodies—Taylor is back with his first album in seven years, thanks to the label Jazz Is Dead.
Taylor’s career spans over six decades, during which he’s worn many hats: guitarist, singer, songwriter, and producer. In the 1970s and early ’80s, he released a string of influential albums before stepping away from the spotlight to teach music at the University of Ghana. But his 2010 album, *Love and Death*, reignited interest in his work, introducing him to a new wave of fans and inspiring artists like Usher and the Black Eyed Peas to sample his music.
Adrian Younge, co-founder of Jazz Is Dead, stumbled upon Taylor’s music while digging through old records. “He’s a legend who was making music at the same time as Fela Kuti, but many people in the U.S. don’t know about him,” Younge shared. Determined to change that, Younge and his team worked with Taylor to create a fresh album, set to release on January 31.
During a recent video call from his home in Saltpond, Ghana, Taylor, dressed in a maroon T-shirt and a New York baseball cap, let his son Henry do most of the talking. Though quiet, Taylor’s presence was undeniable—a testament to his enduring legacy.
This new album isn’t just a comeback; it’s a celebration of Taylor’s timeless artistry. For fans of highlife, Afrobeat, or just great music, Ebo Taylor’s latest work is a must-listen.
