Democrats are making headlines with their first united pushback against President Trump, as they accuse him of hitting the nation’s most vulnerable by freezing vital government aid. From governors to mayors, leaders across the party are speaking out against the White House’s decision to pause grants, loans, and other federal assistance.

Since Trump’s election win in November, Democrats have been split on how to respond. Some pushed for all-out resistance, while others, especially those from areas where Trump gained support, looked for ways to work with the administration on issues like immigration and inflation. But this week, the party came together to call out what they see as a direct attack on programs that help struggling families, the elderly, and critical services like police, hospitals, and transportation.

“Donald Trump’s administration is lying to you,” Illinois Governor JB Pritzker said at a fiery press conference in Chicago. “What the president is trying to do is illegal.”

The outcry isn’t just talk—action is already in motion. California Attorney General Rob Bonta led a lawsuit to block Trump’s order, joined by two dozen other Democratic attorneys general. They’re focused on protecting programs like child-care centers, food assistance, and Medicaid, which they say are essential for communities across the country.

“I will not stand by while the president attempts to disrupt programs that feed our kids, provide medical care, and support housing and education,” Bonta said.
