A Delta Air Lines flight bound for Honolulu was abruptly canceled Thursday after crew members accidentally deployed the plane’s emergency slide. The mishap occurred before passengers could board, leaving many frustrated but commending the airline staff for handling the situation gracefully.
The flight, Delta 419, was scheduled to travel from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu. According to reports, the crew mistakenly activated the emergency slide on the Boeing 767, causing damage to the aircraft. With no replacement slide available and the flight crew running out of time, the airline had no choice but to cancel the trip.
One passenger, who wished to remain anonymous, shared their experience with CNN. They described a series of delays that led to a last-minute aircraft switch from a Boeing 757 to a 767, requiring new seat assignments. Just before boarding, the emergency slide was accidentally deployed. After waiting over an hour and a half, passengers were informed the flight couldn’t proceed.
“It was extremely frustrating, but the gate agents were wonderful in handling a really tough situation,” the passenger said. They were eventually rebooked on an Alaska Airlines flight for the following day.
Delta apologized to affected customers and worked to rebook them on alternative flights. The incident added to a challenging day for the airline, which canceled 2% of its flights and delayed 21% on Thursday, according to FlightAware.
While the situation was far from ideal, passengers appreciated the efforts of Delta’s staff to manage the unexpected hiccup. Travelers are now hoping for smoother skies ahead.
