Coco Gauff’s Winning Streak Ends at Australian Open Quarterfinals
Coco Gauff’s hot streak this season has finally been snapped. The American tennis star, who had won her last 13 matches, fell to Paula Badosa in a thrilling 7-5, 6-4 quarterfinal clash at the Australian Open on Tuesday.
Gauff, who was eyeing her second Grand Slam title after her 2023 US Open win, fought hard but couldn’t overcome Badosa’s relentless play. The Spaniard, seeded 11th, delivered a standout performance on Rod Laver Arena, marking her first-ever trip to a Grand Slam semifinal.
“It’s tough right after, and I’m still disappointed, but I gave it my all on the court,” Gauff shared after the match. “Some matches go my way, some don’t. I’m proud of how I fought.”
The first set was a nail-biter, with Badosa breaking Gauff’s serve at 5-5 and sealing the set with a stunning forehand winner. The second set saw Gauff struggle with unforced errors, particularly on her forehand, which ultimately cost her momentum.
Despite a late rally, Gauff couldn’t turn the tide. Badosa closed out the match with a decisive forehand winner, clinching her third attempt at a Grand Slam quarterfinal.
After the win, Badosa opened up about her struggles with a persistent back injury, which nearly led her to retire last year. “I’m really proud of how I fought through all that, especially mentally,” she said.
Badosa now faces defending champion Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals, setting the stage for an exciting showdown. Meanwhile, Gauff’s focus will shift to regrouping and preparing for her next challenge.
