The CIA has shifted its stance on the origins of Covid-19, now suggesting the virus might have escaped from a lab in China. However, the agency admits this conclusion comes with “low confidence,” meaning they’re not entirely sure.

For years, the CIA avoided picking sides between the two main theories: a natural origin or a lab leak. But after reviewing existing information, the agency now leans toward the idea that the virus accidentally escaped from a research facility. Still, they’re quick to point out that a natural origin can’t be ruled out either.

This new assessment comes just days after John Ratcliffe took over as CIA director. Ratcliffe has long been vocal about his belief that the pandemic started due to research activities in China. In a recent interview, he promised to prioritize uncovering the truth about Covid-19’s origins.

Interestingly, this review of the virus’s origins isn’t based on new intelligence. Instead, it’s a fresh look at old data. Officials have said it’s unlikely new evidence will surface after so many years.

While the CIA’s latest take adds weight to the lab leak theory, it’s important to note that all U.S. intelligence agencies agree on one thing: Covid-19 wasn’t created as a biological weapon. They also largely agree the virus wasn’t genetically engineered.

The big question—whether the pandemic started in a lab or in nature—remains unanswered with certainty. For now, the debate continues, and the world is left waiting for more clarity.
