China Clamps Down on Panda Fan Culture Online

Pandas are stealing the spotlight in Washington this week as the National Zoo unveils two adorable new residents on loan from China. But back home, the mood is far less festive. Beijing is cracking down on panda fan culture, sending a stern message to those who dare to speak out online.

In recent months, Chinese authorities have arrested or questioned several online influencers for spreading what they call "rumors" and promoting "radical fan culture." This includes advocates for panda welfare and critics of overseas panda exchanges, like the one bringing these cuddly ambassadors to the U.S.

For years, China’s panda fans have been vocal about animal welfare issues, especially concerning aggressive breeding practices and the separation of cubs from their mothers. While the government once tolerated this activism, that leniency seems to have ended.

Just last month, police in Sichuan Province detained 12 people for allegedly smearing panda experts, inciting violence, and spreading false information. State media has also warned against the risks of panda fandom, accusing influencers of harassing breeding center staff and profiting from livestream donations.

This crackdown is part of a broader effort by Chinese leader Xi Jinping to rein in internet fan culture. What began as a celebration of pandas has turned into a cautionary tale for those who push boundaries online.

While pandas continue to charm crowds in Washington, their biggest fans in China are being told to tread carefully.
